Review-Accomack County VA

Accomack County, Virginia, Court Order Abstracts: 1682-1690, Volume 7

Compiled by Jo Ann Riley McKey

Accomack County’s seventh book of court orders began with the court session held on 19 February, 1682/83. The court clerk, John Washbourne, recorded the court’s decisions for 7 years.

This volume contains a 33 page introduction that spotlights the more interesting and revealing incidents found in the court orders and the entries that followed them. This portion of the book is akin to reading a short novel about life during the period.

The pages of the book contain a fascinating collection of disputes, crimes and punishments, highways, weather conditions, food, farming and many more items about life in the county in the late 1600’s. Also included are wills and deeds that aid researchers.

The volume is made more usable because it contains a 43 page index. Also included is a list of titheables for the county for 1692.
